Ecuador Bike and Riding PDF Print E-mail

Driving conditions:

The main road cutting across the country is the Pan-American and is in good condition all the way through. Secondary roads tend to be paved also but are plagued with potholes seemingly on each bend thus making driving very stop and go. Certain sections of roads (near Cuenca and Banos) were under construction when we went thru. Be particularly cautious with dogs as they do not seem to grasp the concept of just how dangerous a vehicle can be.

Recommended roads:

The Pan-American from the Colombian border to Quito has some nice views.

Police and military:

Police and military are practically non-existent on the roads and drivers drive accordingly. Be careful out there!

Services:

We have been told that there is a BMW shop in Quito but we did not visit them.

Border:

Border crossing: Near Ipiales
Cost for bike: Free
Cost for us: Free
Time it took: About 45 minutes
Comments: One of the easiest border crossings we have done so far. Please note that there was talk of mandatory insurance for all people with vehicles that was to take effect in May.
