Road conditions: If you stay on the main roads you will find most of them to be in very good shape and traffic light compared to Guatemala or even Honduras. Recommended roads: - There is some good riding to be had on the Island of Ometepe (actually 2 volcanos connected in the center). It is possible to go around the volcanos but this apparently is a fairly rough ride (we did not do it ourselves, this is just what we heard while we were there).
Police, military and other checkpoints: Although we heard from others that the police tend to try and trap bikers with fake fines and infractions we did not have any problems crossing the country. Service: There are no BMW dealerships (that we know of) in this country. Border: Border crossing: Gausaule Cost for bike: Free Cost for us: We were charged 7$ each. Other tourists were charged the same at another border crossing. It seems to be the norm even if according to the CA-4 agreement crossings should be free. Time it took: 1 hour Comments: The 17 kilometers after the border crossing are very bad (road wise). Avoid the “helpers” at this crossing. They are not to be trusted and are useless. |
