Road conditions: Roads in El Salvador are among some of the best in the region. In addition, signage is quite good outside of major cities. But while the roads are good there are numerous obstacles (animals on the road) and as in other Latin American countries traffic and driving habits are sometimes intense. Recommended roads: - Perhaps the most scenic route in the country, the “Ruta de las Flores” takes you into the mountains and across 3 cute little villages.
- The highway along the pacific coast has some interesting scenery although it is not nearly as nice as its counterpart in Mexico.
Police, military and other checkpoints: There is a very weak police and military presence in El Salvador. In fact, we were not stopped a single time while we were there (almost a month in total). Services: Excel Automotriz at the corner of Bulevar Venezuela and Avenida Luis Poma in San Salvador can service BMW motorcycles. They will have parts (usually) for any model from 2000 to present. For older models they may need to order (2 to 5 days). Phone: (503) 2298-5544. GPS coordinates are N13º41.552 W089º12.996 Border: Border crossing: Anguiatu Cost for bike: 3 quetzals Cost for us: free Time it took: 2 hours Comments: Easy to get through. Money changers offer an OK rate. |
