We are writing this entry from beautiful Vancouver where we have been resting for the past few days. Resting from a quick tour of some of the best the US has to offer. We started with a drive into Texas and took the opportunity to hook up with our old friends Ken and Claudine (and their 2 children). They're on a 2 month road trip, touring just about all of the US...

Now that is a happy family! So together we all visited San Antonio...

So after our visit of the canal and the Alamo we all headed off our seperate ways and decided to meet up near the Arizona border. Being in a campground provided us with the perfect excuse to break out a couple of tequila bottles we had brought over from Mexico. As you can guess, it wasn't long before we started clowning around...

As soon as we entered Arizona the scenery started to get a bit more interesting...

The above picture was taken at a campground just outside of Tucson. We had gone there to attend Overland Expo, a meeting of overland travelers from across North-America...

Then it was off to start our visit of some of the National Parks. We started with the Grand Canyon...

Then took a ride into Monument Valley...

Arches National Park in Utah (yup, the weather was getting a little intense)...

Still trying to live as cheaply as possible...

But still having fun and relaxing once in a while...

This is Bryce Canyon National Park, just stunning...

After all of that wonderful nature we somehow ended up here...

We spent the next few days exploring the Vegas strip and attended the wedding of Ken and Claudine (!). But eventually it was time to go once again and we made our way into California. We had received a wonderful invitation from Richard and Jacqueline, a couple of experienced riders from Benicia near San Francisco so we went to stay with them a couple of days. They are a very nice couple and we hit it off immediately...

Richard is quite good around bikes and he was able to teach me several good tricks for tuning the bike...

Our last couple of days in the US were not the best. As soon as we left the comfort of Benicia we drove right into cold temperatures and rain. But despite the weather we still enjoyed driving among the redwoods of northern California...

So that was it, our 1 month tour of the US condensed into a rather picture intensive entry. Hope you enjoyed it. Next up, CANADA!!!!

We finally made it to Texas! We stayed a total of  5 days with the majority of our time in San-Antonio. We took advantage of the presence of a BMW dealership to change our front tire. Turns out the front brakes also needed changing. We are ready for Mexico!

Natchez Trace PDF Print E-mail

We left Lake Lurleen and made our way onto the Natchez trace which turned out to be the nicest ride we have done in the US. A beautifully maintained road with wonderful scenery. We ended up camping in Rocky Springs which is towards the southern end of the trace. At around 3:00am I was awakened by a sound that I could have sworn was a cougar. We were assured by our camping neighbors the following morning that no, cougars did not roam the woods of the Natchez Chase. We are still not convinced…

We debated some time about whether or not we should do the Blue Ridge Parkway (we were right next to it) but decided that it was simply too cold to go up in the mountains. We opted instead to cover more ground and made our way from Roanoke to Chattanooga in Tennessee. The promise of warmer days was in the air as we started heading for Lake Lurleen Stare park in Alabama.

Our stay in Allegany state park was brief but pleasant. We had a chance to really test our packing skills and found they were somewhat lacking. After struggling to get everything onto the bike we made our way to Shawnee state park in Pennsylvania. The decision was made to end our suffering and stay in a motel for the following night. We arrived in Roanoke and treated ourselves to a Travel Lodge. Much TV was viewed and the heat was turned on full for most of the night. Ah, sweet dryness!!!

Into the US PDF Print E-mail

The morning we left it was cold and raining and would turn out to be the only truly miserable weather we would get between Montreal and San Antonio. As with every border crossing we have undertaken together we were nervous as we approach the guards at Niagra Falls. “Good morning, can I see your passports?” We quickly oblige. “Where are you headed?”. To Mexico. “How long will you be in the US?” Three to four weeks. No more questions as the guard punches data into his terminal. “Bring your vehicle to the inspection dock” Damn.

We are asked to wait inside and the bike is not inspected, which is a good thing. It would take us a good hour to repack everything if it was. After being called to the counter it seems an individual who shares my name has a restraining order out on him and hence I am on a watch list. After 15 minutes we are released and start heading to Allegany Park in New York State
