After Cambodia we headed back to Bangkok in Thailand. We were desperate to find a nice beach somewhere to relax and also wanted to plan our return home. With just 10 months to go until we get back to Canada, it is time to start thinking just how we will do this and a beach sounded like the ideal place to work things out.
Our first choice for a nice beach was about 100km north of Phuket. Like most places we choose to go to, we had heard about Khao Lak from other tourists. Quiet bungalows, low prices, white sand, it all sounded fantastic. So off we went, leaving Bangkok bright and early (6am) and began what would end up being an 800 kilometer ride in one day (we’ve done this kind of distance before but we try not to make it a habit). The ride went well and we even had the opportunity to use an award winning toilet along the way…
Now let me ask you. How often do you get to take a dump in an award winning toilet in North-America?
We did eventually get to Khao Lak and yes, the sand was white but the bungalows were a little pricey so after a couple of days we decided to try another beach about 4 hours away at Ko Lanta. But again we found it expensive so on the recommendation of a Russian couple we met we decided to try Ko Phanghan a little higher north. And this is where we hit the jackpot. The sand was white, the bungalow was cheap, the food was fantastic and the snorkeling even better. The next seven days were spent eating, swimming and planning.
So the decision was confirmed that we would return to South-America and drive home from there. Now all we needed to figure out was how to get a 250 kilo motorcycle from South-East Asia to South-America. Despite the nice relaxing setting we never did figure out how to do this and are still trying to work out our options. Do we ship by sea (1 to 3 months) or do we ship by air (3000$ or more just for the bike)? Do we send from Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur or even Singapore? Do we send to Chile or do we send to Argentina? So as I sit here in Georgetown Malaysia we are still trying to figure all this out. Maybe we should go back to the beach and try to meditate on it all. |
