One of the biggest challenges we faced when preparing for our trip was determining who much it would all cost. We never did find much out there on the net and vowed to help others in search of this type of info by posting on our own website. So here is what we have spent from departure in October of 2007 to arrival in May of 2010.

The costs here do not include the motorcycle cost nor trip preparations. The costs shown are those once on the road and are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise noted. By the way, MF&B is short for Marie-France and Brian.

TOTAL COST FOR 970 DAYS, FOR 2 PERSONS AND 1 MOTORCYCLE IN CAD:  93487$ or 96.37$/day*
*This includes all expenses, (plane tickets, moto and health insurances, food, lodging, gaz, visas, etc). This is not a lot!
It can cost less if you wildcamp a lot in the Americas, if you drink zero wine or beer, and if you replaced all the seals yourself on your second hand BMW before leaving on the trip.
It can cost more if you don't camp and cook in Argentina, if you sleep in coslty places (for us 30-45$ a night was a rare treat!), and if you do activities such as rafting, skydiving, horse riding and trekking.

TOTAL COSTS FOR TRANSPORT FOR US AND MOTO:
TRANSPORT FROM/TO: Per person For the moto
PANAMA/COLOMBIA (03/2008)* 300.00 $ USD 650.00 $ USD
ARGENTINA/BELGIUM (01/2009)** 1,350.00 € 320.00 €
MALAYSIA/ARGENTINA (09/2009)*** ------------ 2124.00 $ CAD
SINGAPORE/CHILE (10/2009) 1477.00 $ CAD ------------
COLOMBIA/PANAMA (03/2010)* 364.00 $ CAD 787.00 $ CAD
Total in CAD$ for 2 persons // moto 8761$CAD/2pers 4009$CAD/moto
* The motorcycle flew with GIRAG, but their price seems to fluctuate often.
**We took a cargo ship with GRIMALDI. It took us 31 days.

***The amount includes the fees for shipping from Malaysia (1163$) and the fees for retrieving the moto in Buenos Aires (962$). It is cheaper, by far, to retrieve the moto in Chile, but takes longer to ship to Chile.

THE FOLLOWING IS DIVIDED IN 4 SECTIONS
The first one contains the amounts for the whole trip. The other 3 sections are divided as follow:
- The Americas on the way down (04-10-2007 to 13-01-2009)
- Europe to South East Asia (14-01-2009 to 04-10-2009)
- The Americas on the way up (05-10-2009 to 31-05-2010)

Other°°° $11,515.86
Touristic attractions¹ $1,346.92
Total $93,487.64

* We paid our home registrations because not only is it the law, it also has to be valid to obtain the Carnet de Passage en Douane. We also purchased insurance in countries where it is the law or a good idea (ex.USA).
** It doesn't have a name in English. You will find out all you need to know about a carnet on www.horizonsunlimited.com and on the CAA website www.caa.ca/travel/travel-carnet-e.cfm (
for Canadians, Americans and I think Mexicans too).
*** This INCLUDES all tires and oil changes, plus work on our leaking seals and our gearbox.
° In addition to numerous other benefits, sharing a bed saves money.
°° These are fees charged at borders for the motorcycle. The worst by far is Honduras.
°°° It seems high, but don't forget we lived on the road. This includes, but is not limited to: a computer, a camera and other small electronics from Singapore, new gear for Brian, clothes and shoes to replace our worn stuff, a tent and mattresses, internet, haircuts, Spanish classes, websites fees, mail, sheepskin, bank fees, taxis, buses, passport renewals, business cards, travel books, our Turkey speed fine (%$?&*), SIM cards, cellphone (yep!), maps, glasses, showers, etc.
¹ We saw all major touristic attractions, usually cultural or architectural. This can be a lot higher if you skydive, horse ride, hike in the Himalayas (plane ticket) and raft.
